The Parking Lot has designed a sheltered space in the Urban Farm to keep the kitchen and banqueting table from safe weathering.  A system that reuses oyster shells waste in an accessible and user-friendly manner.

The canopy would be constructed from reclaimed timber and cladding with unique 1 M by 1 M oyster shell panelling, the panelling comes with ‘How To’ instructions, therefore, can be gradually built up by the user once enough waste has been accumulated. What makes the panelling pure is the organic materials being reused, whole oyster shells are woven vertically using strong natural fibres, creating an atmospheric pattern, a game of shadows which will allow the ‘light to get in’ under the canopy.

Furthermore, inspired by the restaurant kitchen the rectangle shell - cut the shells with a jewellery saw into a balanced rectangular shape, the tiles can be installed on the outdoor kitchen as splash-back or simple decoration by using  traditional tiling methods

Our design is playful. The modular walls are simply fixed together, therefore, can change as fast as the weather changes in Manchester! Another playful element painting shells bright, disguised as leaves, check out our community workshops to find out more.

Our installation metaphorically represents the opportunities and outcomes that can generate through teamwork, collaboration engagement and connection within communities.

A closed-loop approach born from the necessity to regenerate from waste, it amazingly opened our collaborative practice to a surprising outcome and to the infinite possibilities of resourcefulness and limitations.

We propose an innovative, energy-efficient option that pays homage to the shell and enhance the restaurant's pure and sophisticated aesthetic: shells wall and shells tiles.
